Best Tactical Backpack in 2026: Vertx, Mystery Ranch, Maxpedition and More
Vertx, Mystery Ranch, Maxpedition, Condor and GORUCK, with the case for buying gray.

The Vertx Ready Pack X is our pick for most people: 20 liters, 2.85 pounds, a shell of 500D nylon and 420D mini ripstop, and a laser-cut MOLLE panel hidden under a plain front flap, so it passes as a commuter bag. It comes in Slate Grey/Depth Charge. If you need room for a 72 hour kit, the Maxpedition Falcon-III is the biggest pack here at 35 liters. Mystery Ranch's 2 Day Assault is the best built of the group at 27 liters, the Pygmy Falcon-II is the densest small bag, and Condor's Medium Assault Pack adds a removable padded waist belt at 30 liters. GORUCK's Basic Rucker is the odd one: a light fitness pack that works as a get home bag, not a bug out bag.
This guide is about the bag. If you are packing for 72 hours and might walk, read the bug out bag guide first, because it argues for a hiking pack with a hipbelt, and the tactical packs here mostly do not have one. For what goes inside, see the bug out bag checklist.
What separates a good tactical pack from a cheap one
Liters, and what they are for
17 to 27 liters is a daily carry bag or a get home bag. 35 to 40 liters is a 72 hour kit for one person. 50 liters and up is a family load or a pack that will mostly ride in a vehicle. Makers measure volume differently, so treat the number as a rough size class, not a spec to compare to the liter.
Fabric denier
Denier is the weight of the yarn. 1000D and 1050D nylon (Maxpedition) is the heavy, stiff, abrasion resistant stuff. 500D nylon (Vertx) and 500D Cordura (Mystery Ranch) are lighter and softer and still outlast most people's use. GORUCK builds the Basic Rucker body from ripstop ROBIC and uses 210D Cordura on the back panel and the strap undersides. Condor's page for its Medium Assault Pack states no fabric at all, which is worth noticing. For a bag that lives in a truck and gets dragged across concrete, go heavy. For one you carry every day, 500D is the better trade.
MOLLE and the attention problem
MOLLE (PALS webbing) lets you add pouches, and it is the single thing that makes a pack read as military. In a shelter parking lot or a gas line after a hurricane, the person with the MOLLE pack and the Velcro flag patch is the person everyone assumes has supplies. Two ways around it: buy a pack that hides its webbing under a flap (the Vertx does), or buy it in gray. Of the packs linked here, the Vertx is Slate Grey and the Pygmy Falcon-II is Wolf Gray. The Falcon-III link is Khaki, the GORUCK is Black and the Condor is Olive Drab, so those draw more attention. Maxpedition also sells the Falcon-III in Wolf Gray, among other colors. We would pick gray over black or coyote for anything you will carry in town.
Hydration sleeve
The Vertx has pass-throughs for hydration packs, the Pygmy Falcon-II an internal hanger loop, and the Falcon-III offers space for a hydration reservoir (not included). Condor lists hydration for a bladder up to 3 liters (not included). GORUCK gives the Basic Rucker a hydration port and an internal D-ring for a bladder. Mystery Ranch does not mention a bladder sleeve. It matters more than it sounds in a Carolina August, and you buy the bladder separately.
Weight and the belt
Published empty weights are 2.85 pounds for the Vertx and 3.0 pounds for the Mystery Ranch. Maxpedition, Condor and GORUCK do not publish one on the pages linked here. More important than the number is what carries the load: the 2 Day Assault has a removable web waist belt, the Condor Medium a removable padded one, and the Falcon-III a sternum suspension belt. None of the tactical packs has a framed hipbelt like a hiking pack. Past about 25 pounds that difference is the whole story.
Vertx Ready Pack X
Our Pick
Vertx Ready Pack X 20L
- 20 L
- 2.85 lb per Vertx
- 500D nylon / 420D mini ripstop shell
- Laser-cut MOLLE under front flap
- Padded sleeve fits 15 in laptop
For someone who wants the webbing hidden, a gray bag and the lightest weight here, for daily carry and a get home kit.
Check price on AmazonSold by Vertx Clothing and Gear
Vertx lists the Ready Pack X at 20 liters, 2.85 pounds, 16.5 by 11 by 7.5 inches, with a 500D nylon and 420D mini ripstop shell and a PU coated 210D lining. The front flap opens to a laser-cut MOLLE panel, so the pack looks like a commuter bag until you want the webbing. There are pass-throughs for hydration packs or comms equipment, stretch bottle pockets, a padded sleeve for a 15 inch laptop, and a rear compartment with a movable rapid access tab, built for concealed carry and compatible with Vertx's Level IIIA ballistic insert.
Who it suits: someone who carries every day, wants the pack to pass as ordinary, and wants the lightest bag here. It takes the top spot because it is the only one that combines a hidden-webbing look, a gray color and the lowest published weight. What it does badly: 20 liters is a day bag, not a 72 hour kit, and the rear compartment is wasted space if you do not use it for what it was designed for. If you need more volume, step up to the Falcon-III.
Mystery Ranch 2 Day Assault
Best Build
Mystery Ranch 2 Day Assault, Shadow
- 27 L / 1,650 cu in
- 3.0 lb
- 500D Cordura
- Full length plastic frame sheet
- Removable web waist belt
For daily carry and travel from the best pack maker in the group.
Check price on AmazonSold by Mystery Ranch
Mystery Ranch lists the 2 Day Assault at 27 liters (1,650 cubic inches), 21 by 12 by 11.25 inches, 3.0 pounds, 500D Cordura, a full length plastic frame sheet, a removable web waist belt, and PALS webbing on the exterior. The three zip opening lets you reach the bottom of the main compartment without unpacking, and it comes in the Shadow colorway.
Who it suits: someone who wants the best stitched pack here for daily carry, travel and a disciplined get home kit. What it does badly: 27 liters is tight for 72 hours, the page does not list a hydration sleeve, and the webbing is still webbing even if it is low profile.
Maxpedition Falcon-III
Most Room
Maxpedition Falcon-III Backpack, Khaki
- 35 L / 2,160 cu in
- 10 x 12 x 18 in overall
- 1050D ballistic nylon, triple PU coated
- CCW compatible
- Sternum suspension belt
For the person who wants the biggest pack in this group for a 72 hour kit and does not need a hipbelt.

Maxpedition lists the Falcon-III at 35 liters (2,160 cubic inches) and 10 by 12 by 18 inches overall, with a 10 by 6 by 18 inch main compartment, a 10 by 3.5 by 17 inch middle compartment and two front pockets. The fabric is 1050 denier water and abrasion resistant ballistic nylon, triple polyurethane coated, with a Teflon fabric protector. Maxpedition calls it an enlarged and improved Falcon with CCW compatibility. The straps and back are padded with 3D breathable mesh, there is a sternum suspension belt, YKK zippers, paracord pulls, and an accordion design that collapses to a low profile when empty. There is space for a hydration reservoir, which is not included. The Amazon link is Khaki; Maxpedition also lists Black, Wolf Gray and Foliage Green.
Who it suits: the person who wants the most room in this group for a 72 hour kit and likes heavy fabric. What it does badly: Maxpedition's page gives no weight, no waist belt and no mention of PALS webbing, and without a hipbelt a full 35 liters rides on your shoulders. Khaki is not the low profile choice; the Wolf Gray version is.
Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon-II
Toughest Small Pack
Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon-II Backpack, Wolf Gray
- 18 L / 1,100 cu in per Maxpedition
- 9.5 x 8 x 17.5 in
- 1000D ballistic nylon, triple PU coated
- YKK zippers
- PALS on front, sides and straps
For the person who wants a compact pack with the heaviest fabric in this group and does not need a 72 hour kit.
Check price on AmazonSold by Amazon.com
Maxpedition lists the Pygmy Falcon-II at 18 liters (1,100 cubic inches), 9.5 by 8 by 17.5 inches, 1000 denier ballistic nylon with a triple polyurethane coating, YKK zippers with paracord pulls, 2.5 inch padded shoulder straps with PALS webbing and a removable sternum strap, PALS on the front and sides, two mesh side pouches sized for a 1 liter bottle, and an internal hanger loop for a hydration bladder. It comes in Black, Khaki, Wolf Gray and Foliage Green.
Who it suits: the person who wants a small, dense bag with the heaviest fabric in this guide. What it does badly: Maxpedition's page gives no weight and lists no waist belt, and at 18 liters it is a day bag or a get home bag, not a 72 hour kit.

Condor lists the Medium Assault Pack at 30 liters (1,846 cubic inches), 19 by 12 by 9 inches, a compression molded back panel, external side compression straps, a heavy-duty carry and drag handle, PALS webbing, and a removable padded waist belt with MOLLE that fits hips from 32 to 50 inches. It takes a hydration bladder up to 3 liters (not included). Condor states no fabric and no weight. It comes in Olive Drab, Black and Coyote Brown.
Who it suits: a first kit or a spare bag for a relative, from a known maker, with a padded belt. What it does badly: with no stated fabric or weight you are trusting the brand, and there is no gray.
GORUCK Basic Rucker
Built for Rucking
GORUCK Basic Rucker 17L, Black
- 17 L (a 14 L size also exists)
- Ripstop ROBIC body, water resistant
- 210D Cordura back panel and strap undersides
- Internal pocket for a 10, 20 or 30 lb ruck plate
- Scars Lifetime Guarantee
For someone who rucks for fitness and wants one small, light bag that can double as a get home pack.
Check price on AmazonSold by Goruck
GORUCK describes the Basic Rucker as streamlined for speed and designed for comfort while rucking, meaning walking with weight on your back for fitness. It comes in 17 liters and a 14 liter size that is 2 inches shorter, for people 5'10" and under. The body is ripstop ROBIC, lightweight and water resistant, with 210D Cordura on the strap undersides and back panel, 20mm raised lumbar support, a reflective strip, an elastic side pocket for slim water bottles, and a hydration port with an internal D-ring for a bladder. A raised internal pocket holds a 10, 20 or 30 pound ruck plate. All GORUCK gear carries the Scars Lifetime Guarantee. The Amazon link is the Black 17 liter, sold by GORUCK.
Who it suits: someone who already rucks and wants one light bag that can also sit in the car as a get home pack. The plate pocket is useful in an odd way: you can load it to train with the same bag you would grab in an emergency. What it does badly: it is a fitness pack, not a 72 hour bag. At 17 liters there is little room for water, food, a layer and a first aid kit together. GORUCK's page lists no weight, dimensions or MOLLE, and it is Black, which draws more attention than gray.

Who should skip a tactical pack
If you will walk more than a mile or two with the bag, skip the tactical packs and buy one of the framed packs in the bug out bag guide. If you want a bag for the office that also holds a get home kit, the Vertx or the Mystery Ranch are the two that will not draw a second look. If your plan is a 72 hour kit, do not buy the GORUCK or the Pygmy Falcon-II for that job.
There is no 50 liter pack here; if you need a family load, look at the bug out bag guide. For the rest of the category, see go bags and kits.
Questions people ask about tactical backpacks
What size tactical backpack do I need?
17 to 30 liters for daily carry or a get home bag, 35 to 40 liters for one person's 72 hour kit, 50 liters or more only for a family load that rides in a vehicle.
Is 1000D nylon worth the weight?
For a bag that lives in a truck, yes. For a bag you carry every day, 500D Cordura or nylon is lighter, softer and still lasts for years.
Does MOLLE make me a target?
It makes you noticed, which is not the same thing, but after a storm the person who looks prepared gets asked for things. A gray pack with hidden or low profile webbing solves most of it.
Can a rucking pack be a go bag?
A small one can be a get home bag. The GORUCK Basic Rucker is 17 liters, light, bladder ready and backed by a lifetime guarantee, but that is too little room for a 72 hour kit.
Our pick, and why
Buy the Vertx Ready Pack X if you want the capability without the look, the Maxpedition Falcon-III if you need room for 72 hours, and a framed pack instead if you are going to walk with it.
