Best Fire Starter for an Emergency Kit: Ferro Rods, Stormproof Matches and Tinder
Two ways to make fire, one thing that catches a spark, and the technique that makes them work wet.

Carry two ways to make fire and one thing that catches a spark. The ferro rod is the Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel Army, rated by the maker at 12,000 strikes, with a whistle in the handle and a striker that actually works. The matches are UCO Stormproof in the waterproof case, which UCO says burn about 15 seconds each and relight after being dunked. The tinder is a pack of UCO Sweetfire tabs or UST WetFire cubes, either of which takes a spark and burns for minutes. A Bic in a zip bag goes in every kit regardless. If you want a bigger rod that throws a wall of sparks, the Überleben Zünden or a bare half-inch bayite rod are the step up.
How a ferro rod works
A ferro rod is ferrocerium, an alloy of iron, cerium and other rare-earth metals. When a hard, square edge scrapes it, it shaves off tiny flakes that oxidize instantly and burn at around 3,000 degrees Celsius, per Light My Fire and Überleben. There is no fuel, no moving parts, and nothing to dry out: a rod pulled out of a creek works as soon as you wipe it. That is the whole case for it in an emergency kit. A lighter is faster every single time until it is wet, empty, or frozen, and a ferro rod is the thing that still works then.
Most rods ship with a black coating that keeps them from corroding on a shelf. Scrape it off the strip you plan to use before you need it. A rod that has never been struck will not throw a spark on the first pull.
Why the striker edge matters more than the rod
The sparks come from the striker's edge biting into the rod. A sharp 90 degree edge, like the spine of a carbon steel knife or the dedicated striker in the package, peels off big flakes and throws a shower. A rounded knife spine, a stainless blade with a polished spine, or the edge of a dull multitool scraper skids and throws a few dim specks. This is why people decide ferro rods do not work: it was the striker. Light My Fire and Überleben both include a proper striker. Exotac's fireROD does not, on purpose, because it expects you to use your knife spine; check that your knife has a crisp spine before you rely on it. Bayite sells a bare rod and the listing suggests the back of a box cutter blade, which is a good tip for any rod.
Rod size: thickness and length
A 1/4 inch rod (Exotac nanoSTRIKER) fits a keychain and throws enough spark for cotton or a WetFire cube. A 3/8 inch rod (FireSteel Army, Zünden) is the standard: easier to grip, more sparks per pull, a few thousand strikes of life. A 1/2 inch rod 5 or 6 inches long (bayite XL, fireROD XL) throws a dense shower that lights coarser tinder and is easier to use with cold hands or gloves. Thicker rods last longer; Exotac rates the half-inch fireROD XL at 20,000 strikes, Überleben the 3/8 inch Zünden at 15,000, Light My Fire the Army at 12,000. Nobody will ever wear one out. Pick by hand size and how much you will carry it.
Technique in the rain
- Get the tinder out of the weather. Kneel over it, use your body and a jacket as a roof, or work inside a stove or a dug-out spot under a log.
- Prepare more than you think: a nest of dry inner bark, fatwood shavings, or a Sweetfire tab broken up, with pencil-lead and pencil-size kindling stacked within reach before the first spark.
- Hold the rod still, tip touching the tinder, and pull the striker toward you, or hold the striker still and pull the rod back. Pulling the rod back keeps the striker from knocking the tinder apart.
- Slow, firm pressure beats fast scratching. One long deliberate scrape produces a bigger spark than five quick ones.
- Once the tinder catches, feed it kindling fast and keep it out of the rain until the fire is big enough to dry its own fuel.
Wet wood is the real problem, not wet rods. Fatwood (resin-soaked pine, which grows all over the Southeast) splits to a dry center and lights off a spark when shaved thin. Keep a few sticks in the kit.
Tinder that takes a spark
A ferro rod lights fine, fluffy, dry material. It does not light a stick. The reliable kit tinders are:
- UCO Sweetfire tabs: sugarcane bagasse soaked in vegetable wax, up to 6 minutes of burn per tab, per UCO. Scuff the surface to fluff it and it takes a spark.
- UST WetFire cubes: up to 5 minutes per cube, lights when wet, 5 year shelf life unopened, per the listing. Shave a little pile off the corner for a ferro rod.
- Fatwood: free in any pine woods, lasts forever, needs a knife to shave.
- Cotton balls and petroleum jelly: the do-it-yourself tinder. Work a dab of jelly into a cotton ball, store a dozen in a pill bottle, pull one apart so dry fibers show, and it takes one spark and burns for a few minutes. Cheapest and best per ounce.
Stormproof matches versus a lighter
UCO's Stormproof matches are not safety matches with a coating. Most of the stick is combustible, so the match keeps burning in wind and relights after being pushed under water, per UCO, with a burn of about 15 seconds each. The Titan version is 4.125 inches long and burns up to 25 seconds, long enough to light a stove or a gas log on a windy porch. They need the striker on the box or case, which has to be dry; the kit case carries spares.
A Bic lighter is still the first thing we reach for: hundreds of lights, no striker to lose. Its failures are water in the wheel, cold (butane will not vaporize well below freezing; warm it in a pocket), and running dry. A Zippo is windproof and refillable and the flame stays lit after you let go, which matters with cold hands, but the fuel evaporates when it sits, so it is a carry lighter, not a storage lighter. Carry a Bic, store the matches, learn the rod.

Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel Army 2in1
Best Ferro Rod
Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel Army 2in1
- Up to 12,000 strikes
- 2,980 C (5,400 F) sparks
- 3/8 in rod, per the listing
- 120 dB whistle in the handle
- Made in Sweden
For anyone who has never used a ferro rod and wants the one that just works.
Check price on AmazonSold by Light My Fire Store
Made in Sweden, rated by Light My Fire at up to 12,000 strikes and 2,980 degrees Celsius (5,400 F), waterproof, with a 120 dB emergency whistle built into the handle. The 2in1 striker clips to the handle so it does not get lost, and the bio-based plastic handles give a real grip with wet hands. The rod is 3/8 inch per the listing. What it does badly: the striker is small for gloved hands, and the handle is bulkier than a bare rod. It is the one rod we would hand to someone who has never used one. The Scout version is the same design with a shorter rod rated at 3,000 strikes per the listing, if you want something lighter for a kid's kit. Sold by Light My Fire's own storefront.
Überleben Zünden
Best Grip
Überleben Zünden
- 3/8 in rod, about 2.5 in exposed
- Up to 15,000 strikes
- 5,500 F sparks
- 6-function striker, 550 cord lanyard
- 2.5 oz
For a hardwood handle that fills the hand and a rod that throws a fat spark.
Check price on AmazonSold by Modern Outdoor Life (third-party seller)
A 3/8 inch rod with about 2.5 inches exposed, set in a hardwood handle, 2.5 ounces, rated by Überleben at 15,000 strikes and 5,500 F sparks. It comes with a 6-function striker (scraper, ruler, hex wrench, bottle opener and so on) on a 550 paracord lanyard. The wood handle is the reason to buy it: it fills the hand and gives a confident pull, and the Sånft-korr alloy Überleben uses throws a noticeably fat spark. What it does badly: the striker's scraper edge is good but the tool is flat and thin, so it is less comfortable than the FireSteel's for long sessions. Note the in-stock listing is through a third-party seller, not Überleben directly.
bayite 1/2 x 5 inch Ferro Rod
Biggest Spark, Least Money
bayite 1/2 x 5 inch Ferro Rod
- 1/2 in diameter
- 5 in long
- Approximately 12,000 strikes, per the listing
- Bare rod, no striker included
- Drilled for a lanyard
For a truck or stove kit where a thick rod is easier to use in gloves.
Check price on AmazonSold by Moocatchy (third-party seller)
A bare half-inch rod, 5 inches long, drilled for a lanyard, rated at approximately 12,000 strikes per the listing. No handle, no striker; the listing itself suggests the back of a box cutter blade as the best scraper. This is the rod for people who want the biggest spark shower for the least money and do not mind wrapping the end in tape or paracord for a grip. It is the one we would keep in a truck kit or a stove bag, because a rod this size is easy to use in gloves. What it does badly: nothing to hold on to out of the box. Sold through a third-party seller.
Exotac fireROD XL
One-Piece Kit
Exotac fireROD XL
- 1/2 in replaceable rod
- Up to 20,000 strikes
- Sealed tinder compartment
- About 12 in of flammable repair tape
- 6 in long, 3.8 oz, machined in the USA
For someone who wants rod, tinder and grip in one piece and owns a knife with a sharp spine.
Check price on AmazonSold by Forza Sports (third-party seller)
Exotac machines the fireROD XL from 6061 aluminum in the USA: a 1/2 inch replaceable rod rated at 20,000 strikes, a sealed cap over a tinder compartment that holds their quickLIGHT tabs, about 12 inches of flammable repair tape wound on the body, a FireCord lanyard, 6 inches long, 3.8 ounces. The idea is a one-piece fire kit: rod, tinder and a grip. What it does badly: no striker is included, so it depends on your knife having a sharp spine, and the price puts it in the gift category rather than the buy-three category. Listed through a third-party seller.
UCO Stormproof Match Kit
Best Waterproof Matches
UCO Stormproof Match Kit
- 25 matches, 2.75 in long
- Burns up to 15 seconds each
- Relights after submersion, per UCO
- Waterproof case floats, holds 40
- 3 strikers, 1.7 oz kit, per the listing
For the go bag: matches that burn in wind and a case that keeps the striker dry.
Check price on AmazonSold by Go2 Outfitters (third-party seller)
Twenty-five stormproof matches, 2.75 inches long, in a waterproof ABS case that floats and holds up to 40 matches, with 3 replaceable strikers; the whole kit weighs 1.7 ounces, per the listing. UCO rates each match at up to 15 seconds and says they relight after being submerged. The case is the point: loose stormproof matches in a wet pocket are just sticks. What it does badly: 15 seconds is short for lighting damp kindling, and the striker has to be dry, so keep a spare striker inside the case. Sold through a third-party seller.
UCO Titan Stormproof Matches
Longest Burn
UCO Titan Stormproof Matches
- 25 matches with extra strikers
- 4.125 in long
- Burns up to 25 seconds each
- Waterproof and windproof, per UCO
For lighting a grill, a heater wick or a fireplace in a gust without burning your fingers.
Check price on AmazonSold by Go2 Outfitters (third-party seller)
The big ones: 4.125 inches long, up to 25 seconds of burn each, 25 to a box with extra strikers, waterproof and windproof per UCO. The extra length keeps your fingers away from the flame and the extra burn time is what lights a propane grill in a gust or a kerosene heater wick. What it does badly: they are too long for most match cases, so they stay in the box, and the box is not waterproof. Put the box in a zip bag. Sold through a third-party seller.
UCO Sweetfire Tinder Tabs
Best Tinder
UCO Sweetfire Tinder Tabs
- 24 tabs
- Up to 6 minutes of burn per tab
- Sugarcane bagasse and vegetable wax
- 3.7 oz per pack
For the house and car kits; breaks into pieces so one tab starts several fires.
Check price on AmazonSold by Go2 Outfitters (third-party seller)
Twenty-four tabs of sugarcane bagasse infused with vegetable wax, up to 6 minutes of burn per tab, 3.7 ounces for the pack, per UCO. They burn in damp conditions, do not smell like petroleum, and break into pieces so one tab can start two or three fires. Rough up the surface with the striker before you spark it. What it does badly: wax tabs go soft in a hot car and the pack is bulkier than cubes. Sold through a third-party seller.
UST WetFire Tinder
Lightest Tinder
UST WetFire Tinder
- Up to 5 minutes of burn per cube, per the listing
- Lights when wet
- 0.16 oz per cube
- 5 year shelf life unopened
- Individually wrapped
For a go bag where every ounce counts and the tinder might get wet.
Check price on AmazonSold by Stealth Rabbit (third-party seller)
Individually wrapped cubes, about 3/4 inch square, 0.16 ounces each, up to 5 minutes of burn, 5 year shelf life unopened, per the listing. WetFire lights when wet and a shaving the size of a pea is enough to catch a spark, so a cube lasts several fires. What it does badly: the cubes crumble once opened and the wrapper is fiddly with cold fingers. They are the lightest reliable tinder for a go bag. Sold through a third-party seller.

What we skipped
Magnesium blocks with a small rod on the side: the shavings blow away and the rods are tiny. Flint and steel: a skill, not a kit item. Plasma arc lighters: they need USB charging and cannot light anything that is not touching the arc. Exotac's nanoSTRIKER XL is a good keychain rod with a tungsten carbide striker and a replaceable 1/4 inch rod, but it is a backup to a backup, so it stayed off the list. Fatwood by the box is useful but any brand works; buy it locally.
Fire is one of three things a kit has to do; the others are warmth and shelter, covered in the emergency blanket guide and the rest of the fire and shelter page. If the fire is for the house during an outage, a kerosene heater on our sister site is the safer answer than anything in a fireplace with a cold flue.
Fire starter questions
Does a ferro rod work when wet?
Yes. Wipe it on your pants and strike. The rod does not care; the tinder does. Keep the tinder in a zip bag or a sealed capsule.
How long does a ferro rod last?
Makers rate them at 3,000 strikes for small rods to 20,000 for half-inch rods. A fire usually takes two to five strikes, so a 3/8 inch rod is a lifetime of camping. The striker wears out first; keep its edge sharp with a file.
Can I use my knife as the striker?
If the spine has a crisp 90 degree edge, yes, and a carbon steel knife spine is one of the best strikers there is. If the spine is rounded or polished, it will skid. Never use the cutting edge.
Are stormproof matches better than a lighter?
They are a better backup. A lighter is faster and cheaper per light; stormproof matches work in wind and after getting wet and have no fuel to leak. Carry both.
What is the best tinder to keep in a car?
Cotton balls with petroleum jelly in a pill bottle, or WetFire cubes. Both survive heat in a trunk better than wax tabs, and both light off a single spark.
The one to buy
Light My Fire's FireSteel Army with a pack of WetFire cubes in the same bag, plus a Bic. Add the UCO Stormproof kit when you build the go bag, and spend a Saturday in the backyard learning the rod before the day you need it.
